Carlos Alcantarino nasceu em Belém do Pará, com formação em engenharia , veio para o Rio de Janeiro estudar na PUC-RJ , onde concluiu seu mestrado na Área de Engenharia Geotécnica e Administração financeira na Fundação Getúlio Vargas.
Juntamente com o designer Paulo Mendonça, montou a empresa de design AM Brasil, fabricante de estofados, onde exercia o papel de administrador. Após o falecimento prematuro de Paulo, Alcantarino começou a desenhar, ele tinha uma sólida base em desenho técnico e profundo conhecimento de materiais, que somado ao seu olhar aguçado, resultou em um dos mais premiados designers brasileiros.
Já obteve importantes prêmios no Brasil e no exterior, tais como: IF Design Award, da Alemanha, com uma linha de objetos desenhados em estanho para a empresa John Somers . Ainda com essa empresa, ele conquistou o 1° prêmio do Museu da Casa Brasileira, um dos mais relevantes prêmios nacionais.
O estúdio Alcantarino é referência no Brasil em consultoria e design de produtos, projetos cenográficos e arquitetônicos.
Em 2007 ele iniciou o projeto “Experiência Design “, com foco no design sustentável e de inclusão social.
O primeiro evento desse projeto foi uma exposição com suas peças, em uma balsa ancorada no porto de Belém. A proposta era o design acessível para todos, ou seja, uma exposição de design fora de museus e galerias em um local símbolo da Amazônia.
Uma das salas era toda de material reciclado e, diariamente, crianças da rede pública visitavam a exposição e criavam objetos com esses materiais, a partir do que elas observavam na exposição. Esse projeto teve continuidade no ano seguinte com o nome “Experiência Design -Cabanos”, onde foram desenvolvido diversos produtos a partir de paletes de madeira e correias de transporte de minério, materiais de descarte da empresa Albras, em Barcarena /Pa, objetivando alavancar uma cooperativa de inclusão social.
O resultado foi excepcional, garantindo o 1° prêmio no Salão Design Casa Brasil e ouro no prêmio Idea BR . Ambos os projetos foram patrocinados pela Empresa Vale.
Alcantarino hoje divide seu tempo entre o seu estúdio no Rio de janeiro e sua casa na serra, em uma área rural chamada Brejal , de onde vem grande parte dos produtos orgânicos, no estado do Rio. Sua casa, como não poderia ser diferente , tem um conceito sustentável , projeto do designer. Foi construída em grande parte com materiais de reaproveitamento .
Com a desculpa da quarentena, ele está ficando por lá já tem 6 meses, e está aproveitando para fotografar em suas caminhadas diárias e transformá-las em o que ele chama de “colagens digitais”.
Breve teremos um novo trabalho de arte , com o olhar desse inquieto designer.

Carlos Alcantarino é the BEST. Desde a John Sommers ( tinha uma loja no shopping da Gavea também) o acompanho. Quando o conheci , amei na hora. Além de um DESIGNER estupendo, é um gentleman. Educadíssimo e genial. Está faltando mais festas e reverências para um dos maiores designers brasileiros!
