Documentado desde o séc. X, o mosteiro de Santa Maria de Arouca, em Portugal, exclusivamente feminino desde 1154, afirmou-se, sobretudo a partir do séc. XIII, após o ingresso de D. Mafalda, filha de D. Sancho e neta de Dom Afonso Henriques.
Só iam para o Mosteiro as filhas da alta nobreza portuguesa. Nem todas professaram. A rainha Mafalda, por exemplo, nunca chegou a ser freira. Havia senhoras que iam para lá por opção, levavam um rico enxoval, criadas e viviam no Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Arouca em comunidade.
Hoje, o museu de Arouca, um dos melhores acervos regionais de arte sacra do país, guarda pinturas, esculturas, mobiliário e prataria dos séculos XVI a XVIII. Guarda ainda livros de músicas raros e de elevado interesse histórico, constituído por manuscritos e impressos litúrgicos e musicais, cuja datação vai dos inícios do século XIII até ao século XIX.
O espólio, que faz parte do Museu de Arte Sacra, um dos mais importantes em Portugal, além de reunir obras de arte que vão do século XII ao século XVIII, revelam também a abundância de recursos das monjas.
