Considerada uma das estações ferroviárias mais bonitas a nível internacional, a Estação de São Bento é visita obrigatória para quem viaja para a cidade do Porto, em Portugal. Qualificada como “a mais bela” em Portugal. A beleza da arquitetura e dos magníficos painéis de azulejos impressionam qualquer visitante.
Os turistas quando visitam a cidade vão de propósito à estação para ter esta impressão de grandiosidade considerado por muitos, um dos melhores pontos turísticos da cidade. O estilo da construção, os trens, os vendedores e todo os frequentadores criam a atmosfera perfeita da estação, que conta com segurança, organização e, em particular, o deslumbramento com os painéis com mais de 22 mil azulejos que cobrem uma área superior a 500 metros quadrados. Os azulejos são da autoria de Jorge Colaço.
Paula Azevedo, arquiteta da Unidade de Patrimônio Histórico e Cultural da IP Património, diz que “é um magnífico exemplo de como adaptar uma obra de arte à arquitetura.
A Estação de S. Bento foi inaugurada em 1916 após a circulação ferroviária na Ponte D. Maria. O edifício estava parcialmente em ruínas e foi demolido para dar lugar à estação.
E deu lugar a um edifício imponente e de estilo neoclássico. O arquiteto José Marques da Silva, natural do Porto, e formado em Paris, foi quem ganhou o concurso. Jorge Colaço, pintor e ceramista, também teve forte influência francesa e os azulejos contam vários episódios da história de Portugal.
As cores dos azulejos são muito claras e contam com poesia, sobre o viver de todos os dias, um contrato social sem filosofia.
A monumentalidade do edifício e o fascínio dos azulejos nas paredes ofuscam o cais de embarque com sua cobertura metálica. Próximo aos principais restaurantes e centro do Porto, a estação de trem é a principal do Porto e faz baldeação às principais cidades de Portugal. Imperdível!
