O legado islâmico de Tavira, 'a escondida'

Em árabe, Tabîra quer dizer “a escondida”. Esta cidade do Sotavento Algarvio possui muitas curiosidades e é um presente para os olhos.

Tavira possui a beleza do seu rio Gilão, das suas salinas, das suas antigas muralhas onde podemos avistar a arquitetura urbana e religiosa e os museus que contam o seu dinamismo comercial e estratégico ao longos dos tempos.

A partir do século XII, tornou-se um dos principais centros marítimos e comerciais da costa algarvia por dois factores: um porto defensável e a posição estratégica da estrada que ligava, através da ponte do rio Gilão, Sevilha a Silves. Juntamente com Xilb (Silves) e Ossónoba (Faro), a Tabîra islâmica era uma das mais importantes cidades do Gharb Al-Andalus.

Ao percorrer o centro histórico da cidade, podemos comprovar esta importância pela dimensão do seu Castelo e, mais tarde, com as inúmeras Igrejas em diversos estilos arquitetônicos que são como uma viagem pela História da Arte em Portugal.

Mais do que falar sobre as raízes da História da cidade de Tavira, o Núcleo Museológico Islâmico desta cidade é um convite à descoberta do legado material e imaterial da época islâmica. Este núcleo do Museu Municipal de Tavira foi inaugurado em 2012 precisamente no local onde foi achado o famoso “Vaso de Tavira” (1996). Tem na sua exposição permanente – Tavira Islâmica – uma abordagem histórica sobre  a cidade no período islâmico até à reconquista cristã.

O Vaso de Tavira é um dos mais expressivos testemunhos da vida na região do Al Andaluz durante o século XI. É o ex-libris deste espaço museológico e da sua exposição permanente. Trata-se do mais famoso vestígio islâmico da cidade.

Os muçulmanos foram expulsos, em conjunto com a comunidade judaica, no final do séc. XV. Ainda hoje, as marcas islâmicas são visíveis no centro histórico. Veja-se o topo da antiga colina de Santa Maria – os restos da antiga muralha e castelo islâmico e a mesquita maior – as icônicas portas de reixa, de finos entrelaçados de madeira, evocadoras da herança árabe presente na cultura algarvia.
